Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy in Lincoln Park, Chicago

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the bottom of the pelvis that act like a supportive hammock to help maintain normal bowel and bladder function and provide key core stability. Everyone, regardless of age or gender, has a pelvic floor, which means that anyone can experience pelvic floor symptoms, including:

  • Bowel and bladder dysfunction
  • Pelvic pain
  • Painful intercourse
  • Urinary leakage
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Constipation
  • Fecal leakage
  • Pregnancy related concerns
  • Post-partum: vaginal birth or c-section
  • Prolapse
  • Diastasis Recti Abdomnis (DRA)

Pelvic floor physical therapy can help reduce pain, stop leaks, and regain control over your bladder, bowels, and overall pelvic health.

What should you expect in the first session?

The first session begins with a thorough evaluation: your physical therapist will meet with you in a private treatment room to discuss your symptoms, relevant medical history, lifestyle, and goals.

Together, you and your therapist will progress through a variety of movement patterns, assess the movement of different joints, and measure the strength of different muscles. From there, your physical therapist will educate you on what they believe is contributing to your symptoms and build a plan to address them.

If appropriate, your physical therapist will also perform a pelvic exam. This is an internal pelvic floor exam that involves assessing the pelvic floor motion during breathing, trigger points, and muscle strength and coordination. This is only done with your consent, and your therapist will make sure you understand what will happen in the exam before it is conducted.

What is the cost of pelvic floor physical therapy?
